Sheldon, Iowa — Sheldon Police have solved the case of the hit and run collision that happened Friday morning near downtown, and it turned out to be not exactly as initially reported.
Police say the crash happened when a 2013 Jeep Patriot, driven by 23-year-old Steven Garnes-Collins, of Sheldon, was northbound on 6th Avenue and had stopped at the stop sign at the 9th Street intersection. Police say when Garnes-Collins attempted a left turn onto 9th Street, his Jeep was struck by a 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche, driven by 44-year-old Torrence Lamb, of Sheldon. Police say that Lamb then left the scene of the accident without leaving information or checking to see if anyone needed medical attention.
Authorities say the collision was reported at 7:50 Friday morning, but an ear-witness who lives near the scene, reported hearing the crash shortly after 7:00 am. Authorities unraveled the mystery Saturday, and arrested Garnes-Collins Saturday afternoon on charges of Obstructing Prosecution or Defense and Driving with License Revoked for an OWI conviction, according to Police Chief Scott Burtch.
For his part in the collision, Lamb was reportedly cited for Failure to Obey a Stop Sign and Yield Right-of-Way, and Failure to Provide Proof of Financial Liability.
Damage to the Jeep was estimated at $3,000, while the Avalanche sustained about $250 in damage.
