Severe Thunderstorms Bring 60-Plus MPH Winds, Hail

Above KIWANorthwest Iowa — Severe thunderstorms rumbled through northwest Iowa this (Wednesday) morning, producing heavy winds and hail up to about quarter size, leaving numerous downed tree limbs in its path.

The first Severe Thunderstorm Warning of the morning came from the National Weather Service at 6:49 am, and was for southeast Lyon, northern O’Brien, northeastern Sioux, and all of Osceola counties.  Around 6:45 am, a listener reported pea sized hail in Boyden.

The next Severe Thunderstorm Warning was issued at 7:12 am, this time for Osceola, and counties to the east and north.  At about 7:30 am, we received a listener report of quarter sized hail in Sioux Center.  (See photo below)

At 8:09 am, the National Weather Service issued another Severe Thunderstorm Warning for southeastern Lyon, northern O’Brien, northeastern Sioux, southern Osceola, northern Clay, and Dickinson counties, here in northwest Iowa.  At 8:15 am, a 62-mile-per-hour wind gust was registered at the Sheldon Regional Airport.  At 8:19 am, a listener reported pea sized hail in Sheldon.

Severe Thunderstorm Warnings were issued at 8:20 am, and 8:26 am, for parts of Plymouth, Cherokee, and Buena Vista counties, here in northwest Iowa, as well.

The only damage reports we have received are of numerous branches down around the broadcast area.
