16th Street Project Approved

Sheldon, Iowa — The long-awaited 16th Street project in Sheldon will become a reality this summer after action taken at the city council meeting Wednesday.

The council approved a contract with OMG Midwest, Inc. of Omaha who had submitted the low bid on the project. Their bid of $614,836.07, was 17.3 percent below the engineer’s estimate. About sixty percent of the construction cost will be covered by a D.O.T. grant. Public Works Director, Todd Uhl told the council that 16th Street from Iselin Avenue to Washington Avenue will be re-surfaced with some full-depth patching where necessary. The drainage on the south side will be improved and some trees will be removed. The City will communicate with residents in the area concerning traffic patterns during the construction.

In other action, the council passed the first reading of a re-zoning ordinance concerning Rustic Ridge Addition and Sheldon Crossroads North Business Park on to its second reading. They also set May 16th as the date for a public hearing on the sale of lots in Trilogy Addition, as well as a public hearing to award the contract on the airport snow removal equipment building.

They also heard from Bob Engel, Rod Fonkert and Marv Van Riesen who all had concerns about the idea of the City adopting a code for rental homes. Mayor Meendering said that she is thinking of getting together a group of people representing renters and owners of rental property to hold a workshop discussion with the council on this topic. There is a State of Iowa Code dealing with rental property, but the mayor says that if a renter has a complaint, their only recourse is to file a lawsuit against the owner of the property.
