2020 Sioux Relay For Life Takes The Form Of Cruise-In

Rock Valley, Iowa — It’s going to be a little different kind of Relay for Life this year in Sioux County. But COVID-19 is not canceling the event.

Gerry Bomgaars with the Sioux County American Cancer Society tells us it’s going to be more of a community cruise to end cancer. He says they used to go all night long, and in recent years, it was still a several-hour event, but it won’t be that way this year.

(As said, “This year it’s only going to be a 5 to 7 pm thing with a drive-by. We have the Pork Producers providing sandwiches of pork working the grill for us. And you’ll be able to pick up a sack lunch. If you want to ride by and look at the luminaries and possibly donate for the Relay for Life, or if you want to get a luminary, you can by a luminary for $10 apiece is what we ask for and you can just drive by.”)

He says different kinds of groups have been asked to cruise in to downtown Rock Valley from all across the area.

(As said, “I talked to the Tri-State Cruisers and supposedly it went out to 800 names. We’re going to have cars cruising in and out of town during that time. So if you want, come and see that. I’ve talked to the tractors, the Antique Tractor Club is going to be possibly considering driving up to Rock Valley for that. And I’ve talked to a motorcycle group. So it’s basically, what we’re calling it this year ‘Cruise To The End Of Cancer’ is what they’re saying on the flyer I have here. Hopefully, we can just drive by and have people come in and just think about the Relay for Life and possibly donate. That’s about the only thing we can do this year.”)

Bomgaars tells us the vehicles will be cruising all around town, but their home base, and where you can donate, buy luminaries, and get your food will be a block east of the downtown stoplight in Rock Valley.

He gives us a few more ideas.

(As said, “Wear your vintage Relay t-shirts, support your mission by making a freewill donation, purchase a luminary bag to display at home or wherever you want.”)

For more information, Bomgaars says you can search “Sioux County Relay For Life” on Facebook. The event will be on Thursday night from 5 to 7 p.m.
