Hull, Iowa — The Boyden-Hull Jr/Sr High School’s Forensic Science Class have been participating in a crime scene activity for the past few weeks, that will culminate with the writing of the final mock Police Reports Thursday morning (May 25th).
Sioux County Sheriff’s Deputy Waylon Pollema says planning for the mock crime scene investigation began several months ago.
He says the students were given a crime scene scenario, in this case a homicide, and then they entered the mock crime scene.
Pollema says Sioux County Attorney Tom Kunstle took part in the activity, as well, joining the students to help them write an application for a search warrant so that they could investigate the crime scene.
He says that after the search warrrant was issued, students were able to enter the crime scene, look around, and take photos.
Pollema says the students learned not only about search warrant application, but also evidence collection, fingerprint analysis, and suspect interviews. He says the entire exercise lasted about 2-1/2 to 3 weeks. And Pollema says the kids were somewhat surprised to learn that real crimes aren’t wrapped up in an hour, like they are on TV.
He says the students successfully completed the activity by learning and completing a thorough investigation of the crime scene, analyzing evidence, and interviewing suspects, which he says led them to the correct discovery of the offender.
Pollema says the exercise will complete Thursday morning when the students write a Police Report for their final grade.
