KIWA/SCDC Blood Drive Is Tuesday

Sheldon, Iowa — Community Blood Bank is asking area residents to consider donating blood to support local blood supply for the surrounding communities.

KIWA Radio and the Sheldon Chamber will be sponsoring the All American Blood Drive Tuesday, June 14. The bloodmobile will be parked in front of the KIWA studios at 411 9th Street in Sheldon from 9:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. and then again from 2:00 p.m. until 4:30 p.m.

Community Blood Bank supplies over 500 units of blood every week to people in northwest Iowa, southeast South Dakota, and southwestern Minnesota. Giving blood is a short process that will quickly change a patient’s outlook. When you choose to give blood, you potentially will save up to three lives. After the blood is taken, it is separated into components of platelets, plasma, and red blood cells. Each component has the potential to be transfused to a local patient requiring one of these specific components. Trauma patients will use up to 50 blood components throughout their healing process, and cancer patients could use even more blood, up to 100 units throughout their treatment.

Volunteer donors can donate blood every 56 days, and their act of generosity provides hope to their friends and neighbors 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Community Blood Bank is proud to be the sole blood provider to Sanford Sheldon for over 20 years. You are encouraged to roll up your sleeve and impact the outlook of patients from the local area.

If you wish to donate, you are asked to make an appointment by going to the Community Blood Bank website, and choose “Events”. The requirements to donate are fairly straight forward. You must be at least 17 years of age, but donors as young as 16 years of age can donate with a signed parent consent form that is found on their website. You must weigh 110 pounds or more, and you must be in good general health when you donate on Tuesday, June 14. You are asked to bring an I.D., and it is recommended that you eat and drink plenty of fluid prior to donating.

For more information, or to schedule your appointment, you can visit their website, www.cbblifeblood.org, or call 1-877-877-3070.
