Hawarden, Iowa — Things are starting to improve, but flooding continues to be an issue for northwest Iowa communities.

It’s currently more difficult to get to South Dakota from Hawarden or vice versa. The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office says that both the Highway 10 (SD Highway 46) and 10th Street (Union County Road 13) bridges across the Big Sioux River are closed due to flooding.

High water has been a problem in Hawarden for nearly a week. National Weather Service Hydrologist Mike Gillispie from the Sioux Falls office tells us the Big Sioux is on the way down for the most part, but it’s slow.

The northwest Iowa flooding issues started almost two weeks ago with flash flooding in O’Brien and Osceola counties on Thursday, June 14th.
