Northwest Iowa — The frigid temperatures and bitter wind chills of the last few days have certainly been a big change from the unseasonable warmth of the past few months.
While the turn-around was abrupt, climatologist Ken Dewey says the cold weather we’re having now is really just a return to “normal” temperatures as we approach the start of winter next week.
Until December arrived, our area had been experiencing one of the warmest autumns on record as well as one of the warmest years on record. Dewey cautions against relying on Facebook and other social media outlets that warn of wicked winter weather ahead.
Dewey says our entire region was experiencing a long string of months with above-normal temps, until the calendar flipped to December.
At the moment, he says the weather models don’t forecast a lot of snow, but they do indicate a very cold winter ahead.
