Make Sure Your Car Is Ready For Winter

Winter_Weather_AdvisoryNorthwest Iowa — The extremely cold temperatures we’ve been experiencing should serve to remind us to make sure our cars are ready for the winter season.  Experts say that, if you haven’t already done so, now is the time to go through the winter checklist to make sure your vehicle is ready for the winter ahead.

Experts advise you to check your tires, and make sure they’re aired up to the manufacturer’s specifications.  They say check your wiper blades, check your coolant, make sure your vehicle’s headlights and brake lights are ready to go.

You should also make sure your vehicle’s belts and hoses are going to be prepared for any weather condition.  And since you won’t get far without good tires, make sure they are not only properly aired up, but that they have a decent amount of tread as well.  Experts also say that if your vehicle is a rear-wheel-drive, or in some cases even a front-wheel-drive, you may want to put snow tires on your car.

For some of us, the deep freeze will mean your cars won’t start as the frigid weather was too much for the old battery.  Experts urge you to have your battery tested to make sure it has enough cold cranking amps to keep your car starting, even when the wind chill is far below zero.

And, of course, don’t forget that to put a Winter Survival Kit in your car, in case you find yourself stranded this winter.  The Iowa State Patrol recommends that you have a fully-charged cell phone, blankets or extra warm clothing, water, and non-perishable food items in your Winter Survival Kit.
