Trooper: Fatality Numbers Are Down; Seatbelts Save Lives

Sheldon, Iowa — The number of vehicle fatalities in Iowa has been on a disturbing trend for the past several years. But now there is a little good news to report.

Iowa State Patrol Trooper Spokesman Kevin Krull says it’s still early in the year and things could change, but for now, the news is encouraging.

He says he’s not completely sure why the numbers are down, but he offers a suggestion.

Krull says, unfortunately, education alone isn’t enough.

He says seat belts save lives. In fact, he says he’s going to be doing a simulation at West Lyon School on Monday.

Krull says the “seat belt convincer” is funded by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau. He says it was at the Clay County Fair and the Iowa State Fair last year.
