Sheldon, Iowa — One of the first orders of business at Wednesday’s Sheldon City Council meeting was the Oath of Office for the newest member of that body, 2nd Ward Councilman Ken Snyder.
Mayor Greg Geels administered Snyder’s oath, after which the new councilman took his seat on the City’s governing body.
Other business for the Council included the approval of the plans and specifications for Sheldon’s Crossroads North Business Park Phase II infrastructure, following a public hearing on the matter. The resolution passed sets the bid opening for the project for 1:00 pm on July 15th with the bid letting at the Council’s July 21st meeting. Completion date is scheduled for August 31st of next year.
The Council also passed a resolution approving the agreement for engineering services for the downtown mill and overlay project. This project involves work on 10th and 11th Streets from 2nd Avenue to 4th Avenue, and 3rd and 4th Avenues from 10th to 11th Street. Construction is expected to begin this fall.
In other business, the Council approved resolutions amending the Zoning Ordinance as it applies to 3099A and 3099C Nest Avenue, and conducted the first reading of the ordinance amendment.
The Council also put their stamp of approval on the Water Watch that was declared late last week. The Water Watch is a voluntary water conservation status and Public Works Director Todd Uhl says if water consumption can be reduced voluntarily, it will help reduce the likelihood of having to go to mandatory water restrictions. The Council will revisit the Water Watch issue at their next meeting, which is a special meeting scheduled for Tuesday, June 29th. The primary purpose for that special meeting is for the Council to get more information about the replacement of the Fire Department’s old aerial ladder truck, which sustained more damage than the value of the vehicle in a March collision with a tree. That June 29th meeting begins at 6:00 pm in Council Chambers at the Sheldon Community Services Center.
Mayor Greg Geels told the Council that there are openings on some Sheldon boards and committees for when current terms expire at the end of this month. He listed openings on the Crossroads Pavilion Board, the Sheldon Library Board and the Trails Committee. Geels says anyone interested in serving on any of those bodies should contact him, or the City Office as soon as possible.
