Council Fills Empty Seats On Pair Of City Boards

Sheldon, Iowa — At their Wednesday meeting, the Sheldon City Council approved Mayor Greg Geels’ appointments to a pair of city boards.

Dave Van De Brake was named to the Board of Adjustment and Marv Van Riesen was named to fill a vacancy on the Cemetery Board. The vacancies on both boards were created when Doug Rodger resigned and moved from the City. The Council also approved the application of Spencer Tischer to join the Sheldon Fire Company and approved the transfer of Daniel Dees from the Sheldon Fire Company to the Sheldon Emergency Management Agency. That transfer puts EMA at full capacity for regular members with one slot open for a student member.

The Council also approved an agreement with McDonough K-9 of Anoka for the acquisition and training of a patrol dog for the Sheldon Police Department, as well as training with the dog for Officer Eric Meineke, who will be the police department’s K-9 handler. Cost for the dog is $9,000, with training for both the animal and the officer at $6,500.

In other action, the Council approved the reappointment of Micah Schreurs as the City Attorney. They also wrote off more than $53,000 in uncollectable ambulance bills for the 4th quarter of 2020.

The Council wrapped up their meeting in Closed Session to consider labor negotiations and employment conditions.
