Council Sets Public Hearings

Sheldon, Iowa — After hearing no comments during a public hearing at Wednesday’s meeting, the Sheldon City Council approved the final plat of the Floyd Industrial Park.  They also set January third as the date for two other public hearings.  One is on an amendment to the zoning ordinance.  This amendment will help clarify the specifications for residences regarded as single family housing.  The other public hearing will concern a budget amendment.

In other business, the council approved transferring $400-thousand in surplus funds to the 2017 Capital Improvement Fund.  This money will then be loaned to the SCDC  to be used as part of the payment for the recent purchase of the Granstra property destined to be the next industrial park expansion area.  The remaining $800-thousand will be financed by the use of TIF funds.

The council also approved the final pay estimate for the Crossroads Pavilion. It was noted that all the work on the project has been completed.  The council also heard reports from the Police and Public Works Department.  Police Chief Lyle Bolkema reported that in the Month of November their Department received 208 calls for their services.  During that month they made 15 arrests, 62 traffic stops, covered seven accidents, issued 41 citations or charges and were called to 22 incident reports.

Public Works Director Todd Uhl reported city residents and businesses used 765-thousand gallons of water per day, which is quite normal for this time of the year. He also reported that city crews were busy in November with normal maintenance, work on East 9th Street, sweeping the streets and hanging the Christmas lights.  He also reported that he expects to have the 16th Street project bid letting in April.

This was the last council meeting for two members who have chosen not to run for re-election.  Both Zach Sawyer and Randy Fonkert stated that they have enjoyed their experience as council members and complimented the City staff for their work.  Sawyer’s council position will be filled by Tom Eggers, and the position held by Fonkert will be filled by Shawn Broesder.
