Council To Receive Update On USDA Rural Development Grant

Sheldon, Iowa — A fairly routine agenda awaits the Sheldon City Council for their regular meeting this Wednesday afternoon.

They will accept a resignation notice from Connor Klatt, who has been a street department operator. They’ll approve a road use tax report, some transfers, and the list of second-quarter uncollectible SCAT accounts. The council will also approve the routine requests for Celebration Days street closures, among other routine items in their consent agenda. All the items in the consent agenda are normally passed with just one vote for the entire lot.

The council will get an update on a USDA Rural Development grant award, and one on American Rescue Plan funds. City Manager Sam Kooiker says the City has been awarded five USDA grants totaling $210,600. He says the local match is nearly $498,000. The grants would be used for police equipment (including software, tablets, the replacement of radios, car cameras, and more), police and emergency vehicles, a “quick attack” pickup for the Sheldon Fire Company, fire equipment, and an ambulance for SCAT.

The City is also working on their plan for the Rec Bowl site. Kooiker says the next step is to file the 120-day affidavit.

The Sheldon City Council will meet this Wednesday afternoon at 4:30 in the council chambers in the Sheldon Community Services Center.
