Sioux Center, Iowa — Hot dogs have long been a staple of sporting events, and this fall Dordt University is introducing its own version: the Defender Dog.

The custom hot dog, developed by Dordt Athletics in partnership with Sioux Center-based Member’s Cut, is now available at Defender athletic events. The hot dog includes cheese inside as a nod to Dordt’s black-and-gold school colors and is designed to become a fun part of the game-day experience.

Trent Roose, Dordt’s associate athletic director of facilities and operations, says the goal was to create a concession item that fans would immediately associate with Defender Athletics and to enhance the overall atmosphere with a high-quality local product.

The idea took shape during a partnership meeting between Dordt and Member’s Cut, where both sides discussed creating something specifically for Defender fans. Jen Sawyer, marketing and communication director at Member’s Cut and Farmers Coop Society, says they wanted the item to feel connected to Dordt while also showcasing Member Cut’s ability to develop custom products and unique flavors.

A hot dog emerged as the best fit — easy to serve and familiar to fans of all ages. From there, Member’s Cut tested several flavor combinations before settling on the final recipe.

Roose says adding cheese inside the hot dog gives it a distinctive touch that ties directly to Dordt’s identity while still delivering a quality product fans can enjoy.

Sawyer says the Defender Dog also represents the close relationships among Sioux Center organizations, highlighting how local agriculture, business, education, and community are connected.

The Defender Dog is also available at the Member’s Cut store in Sioux Center, giving fans the option to grill them at home.

Roose says the new item is one more way to make attending a Dordt athletic event memorable beyond what happens on the court or field, with concessions contributing to an experience that keeps fans returning.
