Drive Safely This Holiday Weekend

drunk driving OWI DWI iStockNorthwest Iowa — With the Christmas and New Year’s holidays upon us, the Iowa State Patrol reminds us to drive safely so we can arrive at that holiday celebration in one piece.

Iowa State Patrol Trooper Vince Kurtz says that, since this weekend’s weather may be less than pleasant, it’s always important to maintain control of your vehicle.

Trooper Kurtz says if the roads are bad, you might consider just staying home.

And he says that if your celebration involves alcohol, please get a designated driver.

Kurtz says the number of people who lost their lives on Iowa’s roadways so far this year, is WAY up from last year.

Just this past weekend, Iowa State Patrol troopers investigated 297 traffic crashes from Friday through Sunday, with 10 people losing their lives in those accidents.  And that doesn’t count the number of accidents covered by county or local law enforcement around the state.

Trooper Kurtz says this weekend, and always, when you climb behind the wheel driving is your most important job.  Don’t let yourself be distracted by cell phones, others in the car, or even singing along with the songs on the radio.  Drive carefully, maintain control of your vehicle, choose a designated driver, and arrive at your holiday celebration safely.
