Elderly Sibley Couple Lose $10,000 In Scam

Sibley, Iowa — An elderly Sibley couple has fallen prey to the “Grandparent Scam”, according to Osceola County Sheriff Doug Weber.

Weber says the Sheriff’s Office recently took the report of an elderly couple who received a telephone call from someone informing them that their grandson had been arrested, and was in federal prison in Wyoming. Weber says the couple were then advised to send $10,000 to another state to bail their grandson out of jail. The victims report that the caller sounded very convincing, giving names of law enforcement and court officials. Unfortunately, the Sibley couple sent out the $10,000 “bail”. Weber says deputies are attempting to investigate this crime, but getting to the bottom of such a crime is extremely difficult.

Sheriff Weber reminds you to NOT give any private information over the phone and to contact law enforcement if you receive any suspicious phone calls.
