Northwest Iowa — An Excessive Heat Warning will be in effect for our area for now through Wednesday evening. And Sanford Sheldon is offering to give people a cool place to hang out during the heat.
National Weather Service Meteorologist Peter Rogers explains the difference between a Heat Advisory and an Excessive Heat Warning.
Rogers says the heat index in the Sheldon area on Tuesday will get to around 110. Rogers says the heat index on Wednesday shouldn’t get quite as high as it’s expected to top out at approximately 105, although he says citizens probably won’t notice much difference.
Rogers offers some tips for citizens to beat the heat.
He says be sure and wear lightweight or loose-fitting clothing as well. Rogers says this type of heat can cause serious health problems if you’re not careful.
The high temp should reach or exceed 100 degrees on Tuesday and Wednesday before falling to the mid 90’s Thursday. The high temperature should continue to drop with upper 80’s on Friday, and around 80 for the upcoming weekend.
Sanford Sheldon officials say they are offering to serve as a “Cooling Station” which will provide a cool environment to help community residents that are in need, to “beat the heat.”
Sanford Sheldon Medical Center will have a designated cooling station open from 11:00 am until 4:30 pm Monday – Thursday for those seeking relief from the heat. Their facility is located at 118 N. 7th Avenue — northeast of Highway 18 and North 7th Avenue in Sheldon. The main lobby area will serve as the cooling station.
