Expert: First Frost Could Come Any Day

Sheldon, Iowa — We could be getting our first frost any day now. And that’s pretty normal, according to the National Weather Service.

We talked to Jeff Chapman, who’s a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, where northwest Iowa is part of their coverage area. He says that the normal first frost for our area is right about now.

Chapman says they’re not sure when the first frost will happen yet, but we’ll get close to it this weekend.

So if you have plants that you’d like to save for a while yet, you may want to listen to the forecast and take precautions.

If we remain in an average weather pattern, the first “hard” or killing freeze is probably still a few days away at least says Chapman.

But, the six-to-ten-day outlook for northwest Iowa does call for below normal temperatures, so it remains to be seen.

While we had him on the line, we asked Chapman about early predictions for the winter season.

That prediction aligns with others we have recently heard, which predict a better than average chance of a weak El Niño, which normally does produce warmer temperatures and more precipitation than usual.
