Northwest Iowa — The snow has flown, it’s just about Thanksgiving, and the stores are full of Christmas gift ideas and holiday cheer. But that doesn’t mean it’s too late to get a flu shot.
That’s according to Lyon County Public Health Administrator Melissa Stillson. She says that if you get a flu shot in the near future, it should still protect you from influenza through most of the flu season, which in our area runs November through April.
She says getting vaccinated not only protects you, but it protects others around you.
Stillson says that the nasal mist vaccine is no longer available because the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention could not verify the consistency of the immune response, so all flu vaccination is now done by injection.
She also says she cannot overstate the importance of hand-washing to prevent the flu.
Stillson says they do have certain days on which vaccination clinics are scheduled, but if you just call their office, they can normally find a time to get you or your family vaccinated. You can call their office at 712-472-8200, or your local public health department for more information.
