Northwest Iowa — With harvest season getting underway, many northwest Iowa farmers are out in their fields harvesting the crop, while others are busy hauling the crop to elevators or on-farm storage.
During this busy time, it’s especially important to keep safety in mind. That’s according to Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Crop Field Specialist Joel De Jong. He says there are several things to remember.
Experts advise maintaining at least three points of contact on sturdy structures when climbing, such as both feet and a hand.
De Jong says another significant issue is traveling down the road in tractors, combines and other farm implement.
According to the Iowa Department of Public Health, about 500 Iowans report injuries from farm machinery, tractors, and falls every year.
