Five Sheldon Students Expelled For Remainder Of School Year

Sheldon, Iowa — The Sheldon Community Schools Board of Education approved the expulsion of five Sheldon students for the remainder of the 2020-2021 school year, for violation of the district’s Code of Conduct during their monthly meeting Wednesday evening.

The parents of each of the students have agreed to accept the expulsions and waive their right for an expulsion hearing.

Superintendent Cory Myer tells KIWA that, while he isn’t allowed to go into detail, the expulsions were the result of two incidents at the high school. He says one incident involved one student, while the other involved multiple students.

Myer says that recently there have been incidents of what he terms, “concerning behavior” at the high school and officials are working on a plan to, “eliminate those behaviors from occurring.” He says they’re exploring the possibility of having law enforcement officers maintain a more visible presence in the school, possibly having a law enforcement officer as a School Resource Officer. Myer says there has also been discussion of having the law enforcement K-9 more actively involved in the school building and on school grounds. He says the district’s goal is to make sure students do NOT participate in these types of concerning behavior in school or on school grounds.
