Free Camping Available With Trick-Or-Treat Twist

Hawarden, Iowa — With the kids barely back in school and daytime highs in the 80s, it doesn’t feel like it’s time to start thinking about Halloween (even though the candy is already in the store). But some advance planning is needed if you want to be one of the lucky campers who get to camp for free and hand out Halloween treats at Oak Grove Park near Hawarden this fall.

For clarification sake — this event is actually two and a half weeks before Halloween. And the deal is — free camping in exchange for buying a bunch of your own candy to give out.

The Sioux County Conservation Board will be again holding the annual Trick or Treat Event at Oak Grove Park on Saturday, October 12. Campers may make reservations for a night of free camping for the October event BY PHONE ONLY on Tuesday, September 3rd starting at 8 a.m. Sites are available in both Turkey Ridge and Deer Run Campgrounds. Campers, in turn, need to bring enough candy for 800 kids.

Ages 12 and under are invited to trick or treat in costume at both campsites. Parking will be located near Turkey Ridge, Deer Run and at the river. A trail may be walked to get to Deer Run Campground for trick or treating. The phone to call is Oak Grove Park at 712-552-1047 to reserve your free site.
