Free School Lunches To Be Served By Participating Schools This Summer

Northwest Iowa — Last summer, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) launched their Summer Food Service Program to be sure that students received a nutritious meal daily while things were shut down during the pandemic. This summer that program is being revived.

According to a release from the Sheldon Community Schools, the USDA has issued nationwide waivers which allow school districts and community organizations to extend the operation of the Summer Food Service Program into the current school year through August 6, 2021, or until available funding runs out.

Sheldon Community Schools are participating in the USDA Summer Food Service Program during this time, which will allow for a safe and streamlined service of nutritious meals.  Meals will be provided to ALL CHILDREN 18 and younger without charge. Parents bringing their child may eat for $3.85.

Superintendent Cory Myer says the District will be running busses from their normal in-town bus stops. He says times will be announced soon.

According to the Sheldon Community Schools, FREE meals will be provided at East Elementary School Monday through Friday, June 1st through August 6th, from 11:30 to 1:00pm daily. They ask that you please enter through front door on circle drive. When you come to lunch, breakfast will also be provided for the next day.

The Sibley-Ocheyedan District is also offering the free Summer Meals Program. Summer breakfast and lunch will begin June 2 and be picked up from 11:30am-12:30pm on Mondays and Wednesdays through July 28. There will be no meal pickup available Monday, July 5 for the observed Independence Day holiday.

Meal pickup will be at the high school in Sibley, the Broadmore bus stop, or City Hall in Ocheyedan (locations subject to change). Meals will be available for free to those 18 years of age or under.

The Sibley-Ocheyedan Community Schools have posted an online survey to determine demand for the Summer Food Program. Sibley-Ocheyedan Community Schools patrons are asked to fill out the survey by CLICKING HERE.

If you have any further questions about the Summer Food Program contact your child’s school.
