Gasoline Prices Fall Below $4/Gallon In Many Northwest Iowa Cities

Northwest Iowa — Iowa motorists might be noticing they have a little more pocket change lately as gasoline prices have been steadily falling in recent days, and are under four dollars a gallon in most northwest Iowa towns.

Meredith Mitts, spokeswoman for Triple-A-Iowa, says pump prices peaked in mid-June and have dropped considerably since then.

The current national average price for gas is $4.32 a gallon, which is 26 cents higher than in Iowa. Mitts explains why prices are spiraling — both in the state and nation — and will likely continue falling for a while.

After hitting an all-time state high of $4.76 a gallon on June 15th, pump prices have been in a free fall.

While the statewide average is $4.06, AAA says the most expensive gas in Iowa is in Council Bluffs at $4.27 a gallon, while it’s the cheapest in the Quad Cities at $3.88.

In our area, gas is $3.99 in Sheldon, Sibley, Boyden, Hartley, Sioux Center, Ocheyedan, and Rock Rapids. But since AAA’s prices are from their own survey, we actually have prices in our area that are seemingly both higher than the highest price in the state AND lower than the lowest price in the state. For instance, $3.79 gas could be found in Rock Valley and Hull on Tuesday, at least. But more expensive gas can also be found. At last report in Alton and Paullina, it was $4.24, and $4.19 in both Sanborn and George. The most expensive gas we could find on Wednesday afternoon was in Primghar, where it was $4.29.
