Primghar, Iowa — Felony theft charges against a Hartley man who sold mortgaged corn have been dismissed in an agreement.
O’Brien County deputies said that during March 2017, 49-year-old Douglas Streit sold more than 20-thousand bushels of corn to Ken’s Feed Store in Sutherland, for $64,624.77. Authorities say the Security State Bank of Sutherland had a security interest in the corn that was sold.
Authorities say, Streit, with the intent to defraud the Security State Bank of Sutherland, deposited the proceeds in his personal checking account in Harlan, Iowa, rather than paying his debt to the Sutherland bank.
He was charged with First Degree Theft, which is a Class “C” Felony. But the case was dismissed this past week in a deferred prosecution agreement. O’Brien County Attorney Micah Schreurs says that Streit has entered into a payment agreement with the bank. The state and the defense agreed that dismissing the case would give Streit a chance to gain employment and repay the bank.
Court records say the agreement is in effect for a year, and if Streit doesn’t follow through, the county may refile the charge.
