Hawarden Man Gets Jail Time In Drug Case

Orange City, Iowa — A Hawarden man facing two felony drug charges has pleaded guilty in a plea bargain.

Court documents indicate that 20-year-old Yoni Duenas of Hawarden was picked up on a warrant by the Hawarden Police Department in September. The officer states that when Duenas was arrested, he had on his person 6 individual bags of methamphetamine, a larger bag of meth, and a scale.

In addition to being picked up on the warrant, Hawarden Police also charged Duenas with possession with intent to deliver methamphetamine, a class B felony; no valid drug tax stamp, a class D felony; and a misdemeanor count of possession of drug paraphernalia.

If he had been convicted of the class B felony, Duenas could’ve faced 25 years in prison.

Instead, in exchange for Duenas’s guilty plea, Judge Jeffery Neary sentenced him to 180 days in the county jail on an amended misdemeanor charge of possession of a controlled substance, with credit for time served. He will also have to pay fines, fees, surcharges, and court costs. The failure to affix a drug tax stamp charge was dismissed. He will also have to pay a $65 fine for the drug paraphernalia charge.
