Highway 20 Association To Celebrate, Disband After 60 Years

Northwest Iowa — For the last several years, getting to Des Moines, Ames, or any destination in central or eastern Iowa from our area has been easier with more and more of Highway 20 becoming a four-lane expressway.

The Highway 20 Corridor Association has been fighting to get the highway made into a four-lane roadway from the east all the way to the west side of the state for decades — and with that task nearing completion in western Iowa — the group held their final regular meeting a week ago. Ann Trimble-Ray has been an officer of the association for several years and says with the celebration of the completion of their goal in October, they voted to set a date to end their work.

Trimble-Ray says the mood was both celebratory and melancholy — as several past members didn’t live to see their efforts successfully completed.

There is some historical significance attached to the date chosen of the event in Holstein to celebrate the completion of the four lanes.

The road has been 60 years in the making. With the completion of the project, northwest Iowans will soon be able to get on Highway 20 at the junction with Highway 75 in Sioux City, or in Lawton, Moville, Correctionville, at the junction with Highway 59 in Holstein, Shaller, at the junction with Highway 71 in Early, or any point in between.
