Huizenga: Pay Attention To The World Around You

Northwest Iowa — With the disappearance of University of Iowa student Mollie Tibbetts last month, and the attempted abduction of a Storm Lake teenager last week, protecting yourself against a would-be abductor is a hot topic of conversation.

We talked to Sioux County Chief Deputy Sheriff Nate Huizenga, and he says one of the best ways to stay safe is to be observant.

Huizenga says if something doesn’t feel right or look right, you should trust your gut.

He says you need to stay alert and be aware of what, or who, is in your immediate vicinity.

Huizenga says the buddy system can help you stay safe.

He says that, while we live in a very safe area, bad things can, and do, happen.

Huizenga reminds us that we need to be aware of our surroundings, and not just today, or this weekend, but it needs to become a habit that we practice EVERY day.
