It’s Winter Fireworks Season In Iowa

Sheldon, Iowa — When you think of fireworks, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? For most of us, it would be the 4th of July. But Iowa law permits the shooting off of fireworks around the Christmas and New Years holiday period, as well, IF your city’s ordinance allows it.

Iowa state law allows the use of consumer fireworks from December 10th through January 3rd of each year between the hours of 9:00 am and 10:00 pm, between the hours 9:00 am and 11:00 pm on the Saturdays and Sundays immediately preceding and following January 1st, and between the hours of 9:30 am December 31st through 12:30 am on January 1st.

Some cities and counties in Iowa have more restrictive fireworks ordinances in effect than the State. In fact, in some communities fireworks are still banned.

In Sheldon the winter period for shooting off fireworks runs December 17th through January 2nd of each year between the hours of 12:00 pm and 10:00 pm, with the following exceptions. On New Year’s Eve, fireworks may be shot off in Sheldon from noon until 12:30 am New Year’s Day.

The laws do vary from city to city, and county to county, so you might want to check with the city or county in which you reside to avoid going afoul of the law.
