Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and Outreach specialists will travel to Sheldon on January 4th for the 2017 Crop Advantage Series which will provide farmers, crop consultants and agribusinesses with current research from Iowa State University and updated management information and recommendations based on current and future crop production issues. In addition, the meeting will offer continuing education credits for Certified Crop Advisers (CCA) and pesticide safety recertification.

Joel DeJong, field agronomist in northwest Iowa with ISU Extension and Outreach says that there is no other program in which they are able to bring this many extension specialists together to individual sites across the state. He says it all started years ago in Sheldon.

He tells us what’s in store on January 4th.

Experts say Palmer amaranth, also called Palmer’s pigweed is a weed that has been an issue since some Palmer amaranth is resistant to glyphosate, the chemical in the herbicide RoundUp.

De Jong says that almost all topics at the meeting will relate back to the narrow or negative margins many have been seeing in production agriculture. But De Jong says the fourteen different sites around the state will have different topics, so he encourages farmers to go to www.cropadvantage.org to see if another site possibly has topics that are more of interest to the individual producer. Or if the date is an issue, there are several dates to choose from at the other sites.

Early registration for Sheldon is $50 and due by December 28. Late registration made less than seven days prior to the meeting or on-site is $60. Registration includes lunch, printed proceedings, private pesticide applicator recertification and CCA credits. Online registration and additional information is available at www.cropadvantage.org or from your local ISU Extension and Outreach office.
