Magistrate Removes Himself From Presiding Over Book Burning Trial

Orange City, Iowa — An Ocheyedan man accused of burning books during last fall’s Pride Festival in Orange City made an appearance in court Tuesday.

A pretrial Conference was held Tuesday in the case of Paul Dorr, the leader of the group Rescue The Perishing, who is charged with criminal mischief for allegedly burning books from the Orange City Pubic Library, an event he broadcast live on Facebook video.  During Tuesday’s conference, Sioux County Magistrate Dan Pluim recused himself from presiding over Dorr’s trial because he is a patron and former board member of the Orange City Library.

Dorr had previously entered a not guilty plea to a charge of 5th-Degree Criminal Mischief in connection with the book burning incident. Dorr has demanded a jury trial in the case, and that trial is scheduled to begin in late April.
