Make Sure Your House Number Is Visible From The Street

Sheldon, Iowa — When Sheldon residents receive their next City Utility Bill they’ll find enclosed in the envelope a plea for help from Sheldon’s Emergency Services Departments.

The plea is for residents to make sure their addresses are displayed in such a way that they can be easily read from the street by ambulance crews, firefighters and police officers.

Sheldon City Manager Sam Kooiker tells KIWA that it’s been about ten years since the City of Sheldon made a concerted effort to get all address numbers displayed.

Kooiker says displaying address numbers is especially important for houses.

We asked Kooiker what the City of Sheldon requires for address number displays.

He reminds us that emergency crews can’t always depend upon their phones to find an address.

Everyone should check and make sure that their address number is in place on their home or business, and if not, put them up. Remember to put up numbers that are a contrasting color from their background so they’re more easily visible. And if you’ve painted your house and painted over the house number, replace those numbers with new ones in a contrasting color.

Honoring the request from the Sheldon Emergency Services Departments is actually something you’re doing for yourself and your family. It will make your home or business easier for crews to find if you ever need emergency assistance.
