Man Charged With Felony Fraud, Theft After Trying To Cash Fraudulent Check In Lester

Rock Rapids, Iowa — A Sioux Falls man has been arrested on a warrant for felony theft and felony forgery in Lyon County.

According to a criminal complaint filed with the Lyon County Clerk of Court’s Office by the county sheriff’s office, 40-year-old William Buck Smith of Sioux Falls is accused of attempting to cash a check that he allegedly knew was fraudulent at a bank in Lester about 10 months ago He was arrested a warrant on Monday.

In his statement, the deputy says the check, which appeared to be from Midwest Pro Manufacturing, was made out to Smith in the amount of $3875.77.

Smith was charged with forgery and second-degree theft, both class D felonies. If convicted, Smith could face up to five years in prison on each count.

Smith faces a preliminary hearing on the charges on February 9th.

At last report, Smith remained in the Lyon County Jail in Rock Rapids in lieu of a $5000 bond.
