May 2017 Was Cooler, Wetter Than Normal

Sheldon, Iowa — If it seemed like a dreary and cold May, well, you’re not wrong. That cold and wet weather also created a large headache for farmers in the area, but the farmers made due with what they were given.

According to the official precipitation total at KIWA Weather Center, Sheldon received 4.96 inches of measurable precipitation in 13 days this month coming in the form of snow in the beginning of the month and rain the rest. Normally Sheldon receives 3.37 inches of precipitation for the month.

May 2016 was much wetter than normal with 6.21 inches of precipitation, nearly 3 inches above normal.

May 2015 was also wet, with 4.38 inches of precip falling for the month.

Temperature-wise for Sheldon, the normal high for May is 72, while the normal low is 47. For May 2017 we were five degrees below the normal high and three degrees below normal on the average low temperature. Last year Sheldon was two degrees cooler on the average high, and one degree cooler on the normal low.

June looks like it will start off a little cooler, with the 6-to-10 day forecast calling for below normal temps, but drier conditions with slightly below normal precipitation. The 8-to-14 day outlook for Northwest Iowa is also calling for below normal temperatures, but normal precipitation.
