National Day Of Prayer Is May 4th

Sheldon, Iowa — In 1952 President Truman signed a declaration for an annual national day of prayer, and in 1988 President Reagan permanently set the day for the first Thursday of May each year.

Barb Hibma, a member at Living Water Community Church in Sheldon, says they will be having a National Day of Prayer event on Thursday, May 4th at 6:30 p.m. A Sheldon native and former candidate for governor who has become a leader in Iowa’s Christian conservative community is this year’s special speaker. Bob Vander Plaats will speak about this year’s theme, “Pray fervently in righteousness and avail much” (James 5:16b). Vander Plaats is the president and CEO of The Family Leader, a Christian conservative organization.

According to Hibma, The National Day of Prayer has been observed in Sheldon for 26 years, on the first Thursday in May, with the proclamation from the Mayor.

Hibma says that every public event at Living Water Community Church is known for “heartfelt prayers and patriotism.” She says all are invited to come to this event. It’s completely free to attend.

This event is brought to you by The Sheldon Area Ministerial Association, RISE Ministries, and Honor God Ministries.
