New Lyon County Engineer; Project To Start Tuesday

Rock Rapids, Iowa — The Lyon County Secondary Road Department has a new chief at the helm. His name is Daryl Albertson.

He tells us a little about his background.

(as said:) “I was born and raised in Waterloo and graduated from Iowa State University with a civil engineering degree and have been at a few other counties before here. Just came from Hardin County. Actually I was in the private sector for almost three years just before this and then came here to Lyon County.”

Albertson tells us about his family.

(as said:) “…wife Sherry. Sherry is actually from Lyon County. She was born and raised. So kind of wanted to get back this way towards her family and stuff and we have a daughter Sarah who lives in Lincoln, Nebraska and a son Nick who lives there and Eldora.”

According to Albertson, people probably won’t notice much change with how the department is run, at least initially.

(as said:) “Right now we’re just trying to play some catch-up and it’s kind of a whole new office staff turnover with retirements and stuff. So we’re just trying to maintain and get the things done that need to be done right now.”

We asked Albertson if there were any projects coming up on Lyon County roads, and coincidentally, one of them is to start this Tuesday. About seven and a half miles of 210th Street is to be worked on between Highway 75 and K30 — including the road to the north of Alvord.

(as said:) “We’re doing a concrete overlay over asphalt on A34 and then we’ve had a few bridges that are finishing up right now. Next year we look like we have some more bridges that we’re going to get to and possibly some paving. I’m not quite sure exactly where that will be though at this time.”

He says they’re loving being in northwest Iowa, and he praised his predecessor, Laura Sievers. He says she did a “phenomenal job” and she left him a “nice situation to come to.”
