New Phone Scam Afoot In Sheldon

Sheldon, Iowa — A new scam is being attempted on people in this area, according to Sheldon Police Chief Lyle Bolkema.

Bolkema says several of the Police Department staff have received calls on their cell phones from the phone number 800-331-0500. He says when the calls are answered,  a pre-recorded message states that their AT&T account has been compromised. Bolkema says that since they don’t have an account with AT&T, the calls are obviously a scam of some sort.

He says the phone number that showed up on their caller ID is an actual AT&T number. Bolkema says it appears that someone is “spoofing” that number to make it appear the call really is coming from AT&T, but in fact it is NOT. The Chief says AT&T will not call you or ask for any personal information over the phone.

Chief Bolkema says AT&T has been contacted, and they are checking into the matter. In the meantime, Bolkema advises you to NOT talk to these people or give them any information.

KIWA has learned that other people in the community, in addition to the Police Department, have also received these calls. Again, Bolkema advises you NOT talk to these people or divulge any personal information.
