Northwest Iowa Continues Burn Ban

Northwest Iowa — The summer months had very little precipitation and it doesn’t look as if that will be changing soon.

Sioux County Deputy Nate Huizenga explains to KIWA that the Burn Ban does not mean that residents can’t enjoy the outdoors. Residents can use BBQ grills and outdoor fireplaces, as long as the grill or fireplace is enclosed.

According to Huizenga, trash can also be burned. In order to burn trash without starting a widespread fire, people need to make sure the trash is in a metal container, such as a bin or incinerator, with a heavy one-inch wire mesh on top with holes no greater than one inch. The metal keeps the fire contained inside the container.

During a burn ban, field fires, waterway fires, grass fires, and open fires of any type are not allowed.

Huizenga tells us that because it is so dry fire will spread quickly and it will get out of hand before someone has time to think about what to do.
