O’Brien County, Iowa — The 2020 O’Brien County Relay for Life is going on in spite of the current COVID-19 pandemic, although is a different form than years past.
The event will be held Monday, August 3rd, and will begin with a “Take and Go” meal, which will be available from 5:00 until 8:30 pm (or until the food runs out), at the Sheldon City Park gazebo. The meal will consist of a sub sandwich, chips, dessert and water, and a free-will donation will be accepted. Organizers say social distancing and the wearing of masks is encouraged, and they say, if you’d rather stay in your car, they’ll bring the meal to you.
Luminaries and raffle tickets will also be for sale in the City Park Shelter House, and you need not be present to win. This year’s raffle features prizes that include a propane exchange, tickets for RiseFest 2021, a golf course package, family pool pass, meat certificate and restaurant gift cards.
At 6:30 that evening cancer survivors and supporters will meet in the parking lot of the Sheldon Community High School for a very short program before leaving on a Relay for Life Parade that will go past the Christian Retirement Home, Fieldcrest and continue down the traditional parade route on 9th Street. Parade participants are urged to begin lining up at the high school at 6:00 that evening. You’re also encouraged to decorate your vehicle with your name, the survivor or loved one’s information, etc. The public is encouraged to join the parade along the route to show your support for the survivors and supporters.
