October Weather In Review

State climatologist Justin Glisan says although October ended with an extended period of dry weather, Iowa received a statewide average of 4.6-inches of rain.

That’s just over two-inches above normal for the month.

The wet weather in October followed Iowa’s third-wettest September. Sections of northeast Iowa received the most rain last month, around four-to-six inches above-normal.

Some Iowans saw snow fly in October. Areas of western Iowa received roughly two-to-six inches of snow on the 14th. The statewide average high temperature for October was 59-degrees, while the average overnight low was 38.

The coldest temperature last month, 19-degrees, was recorded in a couple cities in northeast Iowa.

According to the official weather facts kept at KIWA, the average high for the month in Sheldon was 54, while the average low was 33. Those temperatures are quite lower than the normal average high of 62 and normal low of 38. Last year was near normal with average temperatures at 61 and 36.

Over the month, Sheldon received 2.75 inches of precipitation, .83 inches above the normal 1.92 inches of precipitation, and the Sheldon area received 1.5 inches of snow in mid-October, putting us .7 inches above normal for seasonal snowfall for the month.

The 6-10 day outlook for Northwest Iowa is calling for below normal temperatures and normal precipitation.
