Officials: Sioux Center Food Truck Ordinance “To Provide Consistency, Flexibility”

Sioux Center, Iowa — The City of Sioux Center now has a food truck ordinance, and city officials tell us it will mean consistency and flexibility.

Sioux Center officials tell us their new ordinance provides for “continuing to welcome food trucks to the community, promoting safety, and continuing fair competition.”

The new ordinance goes into effect August 20, 2022, and they say it will help ensure food trucks are in a location that is safe and appropriate for traffic and pedestrians. It also lays out general guidelines like having food truck operators provide garbage cans and remove all trash each day, and it gives an opportunity to check their state food license before they begin selling food to people.

Building Official Josh Dorhout says that food vendors “add to the quality-of-life options in Sioux Center.” He says that they are excited to work with food trucks as they see their numbers and interest in their services grow in the community.

Officials tell us the ordinance is designed to provide more consistency with what is required for other businesses to operate within the community and is similar to existing food truck plans in other communities, including Spirit Lake, Spencer, and Storm Lake. Sioux Center’s City Council approved the third and final reading of the ordinance Monday.
