Orab 4th Graders Take 3rd At Dordt University Math Bee

Sioux Center, Iowa — Dordt University has released the results of their Math Bee, which this year was held virtually, rather than on the Dordt campus.

Despite what some would consider a setback, organizers term the event a success with 319 students and 66 teams participating in the event.

Associate Professor of Mathematics at Dordt, Dr. Valorie Zonnefeld says that, given the uncertainty with COVID-19, the decision was made to switch to a virtual math bee. She says a neat aspect is that a few schools from farther away, including Canada, joined in.

Individuals who won first or second place received water bottles, and the top four teams from each grade received a trophy.

The 4th grade team from Sheldon’s East Elementary finished 3rd, while other 4th grade teams that placed were MOC-Floyd Valley in 1st, Hull Christian in 2nd and Rock Valley Christian in 4th.

Fifth Grade Team Winners were: 1st place, Sioux Center Christian; 2nd place, Orange City Christian; 3rd place, Rock Valley Elementary; and 4th place, Sioux Center Middle School.

Seventh Grade Team Winners include: 1st place, Sioux Center Christian; 2nd place, Hull Protestant Reformed Christian; 3rd place, Boyden Hull; and 4th place, Sioux Center Middle School.

Eighth Grade Team Winners were: 1st place, Orange City Christian; 2nd place Rock Valley Christian; 3rd place, Abbotsford Christian; and 4th, Central Lyon.

Zonnefeld says she loves the math bee because it gives kids with an interest in math the opportunity to challenge themselves and to value their passion for math.
