Positive COVID Results Continue Downward

Northwest Iowa — The number of positive COVID test results continue to drop in the four-county area of O’Brien, Sioux, Osceola and Lyon Counties, according to the Iowa Department of Public Health.

A total of 158 new positive results were reported on Monday, that’s 422 less than the previous report. Sioux County reports 68, that’s a reduction of 214 from the previous report; while O’Brien County reports 51, a reduction of 107; Lyon County 25, down 74 from the previous report; and Osceola coming in with 14, down 27 from the previous report.

The news is not nearly as encouraging when it comes to COVID-related deaths in the four-county are. While O’Brien and Osceola Counties have held stead on the number of COVID-related fatalities at 66 and 20 respectively, there were an additional five deaths reported in Sioux County, bringing their COVID-related death toll to 85 since the pandemic began. Lyon County reports one additional COVID-related death, bringing their total to 47. So far, 218 of the residents of the four-county area have perished since the pandemic began.

Turning to vaccination numbers, each of the four counties has increased the percentage of their residents who are fully vaccinated. As of Monday, 49.6% of O’Brien County, 44.4% of Osceola, 40.9% of Sioux County, and 40.1% of Lyon County residents have been fully vaccinated.

Johnson County, in far eastern Iowa is the most vaccinated county in Iowa, with 71.4% of their residents fully vaccinated. At the other end of the spectrum, Davis County, in far southeast Iowa, has the distinction of having the lowest percentage of its residents vaccinated, at 35.9%.
