Prison Inmate From Primghar Dies Of COVID-19

Primghar, Iowa — A Primghar man who was serving a lengthy prison sentence at the Anamosa Men’s Reformatory in Anamosa, Iowa has died of a COVID-related illness.

According to the Iowa Department of Corrections, 51-year-old Jonathon Strain, of Primghar, passed away early Monday at University of Iowa Hospital, most likely from complications of the coronavirus and other underlying medical issues.

Online court records show that Strain was sentenced in O’Brien County District Court to 25-years in prison in November of 2010 after pleading guilty to 2nd Degree Sexual Abuse.

At least five Iowa prison inmates have died from COVID-19 since the pandemic began.
