Rock Rapids Firefighters Fight Two Fires

Rock Rapids, Iowa– The Rock Rapids Fire Department responded to a couple of calls recently.

A truck-mounted manure spreader was destroyed in a fire on Monday, October 31, 2016 near Rock Rapids.

According to Rock Rapids Fire Chief Ed Reck, about 11:30 AM, the Rock Rapids Fire Department was called to the report of manure spreader on fire in the 3300 block of 210th Street, about a half to three-quarters of a mile north of Clark Ahders’ consignment sale property.

The chief says the fire department saw the truck fully engulfed in flame as they approached the scene. He says they used water to fight the fire.

Reck says no injuries were reported.

He says the cause of the fire appeared to be a malfunction in the truck.

Chief Reck reports that the truck and spreader were totaled.

He says they used 500 gallons of water to fight the fire, and crews were on scene for about 45 minutes.

On Saturday, October 29, 2016, twenty-five round corn stalk bales were destroyed in a fire on near Rock Rapids.

According to Rock Rapids Firefighter Eric Borman, about 4:05 PM, the Rock Rapids Fire Department was called to the report of bales on fire near 1772 Fir Avenue, two miles south and four miles west of Rock Rapids.

He says the fire department saw about 25 bales on fire as they approached the scene. He says a neighbor brought a payloader, and a skid loader was used as well in fighting the fire. He says they pulled the bales apart and doused them with water.

Firefighter Borman says no injuries were reported.

He says the cause of the fire is undetermined at this time.

He says they used 4,000 gallons of water to fight the fire, and crews were on scene for an hour and a half.
