Rock Valley Man Dies In South Dakota Hunting Accident

Day County, South Dakota — A Rock Valley man is dead after a Veteran’s Day hunting accident near Webster, South Dakota.

The Day County, South Dakota Sheriff’s Office tells KIWA that 37-year-old Nicholas Van Ginkel was hunting in a blind when he and another hunter moved to change seats. Deputies say that their investigation and witness statements determined that the safety of Van Ginkel’s gun was not set to safe, and that when he moved to change seats a corn stalk got inside the gun’s trigger guard, and depressed the trigger, firing the gun. Deputies say that shot struck Van Ginkel, causing his death.

Van Ginkel was a partner in Van Ginkel & Soodsma Drywall in Rock Valley.
