Rock Valley Voters To Vote On Bonds To Fund New Swimming Pool

Rock Valley, Iowa — The Rock Valley City Council has approved a resolution to hold a special election on the issue of general obligation bonds to construct a new swimming pool.

According to Mayor Kevin Van Otterloo, the Let’s Pool Together Committee has raised close to $1.1-million and is submitting a grant application for the remaining funds to reach their fundraising goal of $1.5-million.

The City’s pool designer, Water’s Edge Aquatic Design, estimated the cost of the new Rock Valley Pool at $3.687-million back in 2019. At the City’s request, they reviewed and adjusted their estimate this year to $4.016-million due to inflation and COVID-related pricing.

Based on the latest estimate for the new pool, voters in the City of Rock Valley will be voting to authorize up to $3.5-million dollars in general obligation bonds when they go to the polls for this special election, which is scheduled for September 14th.

If the bond is approved, the City expects pool bids to be opened in February next year, with construction to begin in April 2022, with completion projected for June 1, 2023.
