Sanford Calls Off Merger With Intermountain Healthcare

Sioux Falls, South Dakota — Sanford Health has announced that they have suspended a recently announced merger with Intermountain Healthcare, which is based in Salt Lake City.

The decision follows the recent departure of Kelby Krabbenhoft, who had been president and CEO of Sanford Health for the past 25 years. The Sanford Health Board of Trustees last week appointed Bill Gassen as the organization’s new president and CEO.  Given the leadership change, Sanford Health says they decided to pause the current merger and acquisition activity while they address other organizational needs.

A statement from Sanford says the Sioux Falls based healthcare organization has great respect for Intermountain Healthcare, Dr. Marc Harrison, and their leadership team and Sanford looks forward to the two healthcare giants continuing to learn from each other.

Intermountain Healthcare leadership says they’re disappointed, but understand the recent leadership change at Sanford Health has influenced their priorities.

Sanford Health operates numerous healthcare facilities in northwest Iowa, including the Sanford Sheldon Medical Center, Sanford Clinics and Sanford Sheldon Senior Care.
