Sanford Sheldon Physician Encourages Those 45 And Over To Get Screened For Colon Cancer

Sheldon, Iowa — We are wrapping up the month of March, but we still have enough time to tell you that this month is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month.

Dr. Ryan Becker, a physician at Sanford Sheldon Medical Center tells us about it.

He tells us experts are now recommending getting screened a little younger than they were before.

We asked him what causes colon cancer.

Dr. Becker says there are many ways to screen for colon cancer.

He says unlike some cancers, with colon cancer, the best preventative is actually to get screened for it, because it can be all but prevented by removing polyps. However, there are some things you can do to reduce your risk, says Becker.

For more information on colon cancer screening and the pros and cons of each method, contact your medical provider.
